Make the Microsoft Office 2019 Installation Experience Smoother with Official ODT Customization Tools

In the Microsoft Office 2019 Professional Plus, the 2016 version of OneNote, Outlook, and Skype for Business are still bundled. Compared to the well-experienced UWP version of Office components that comes with Windows 10, there is clearly no need to keep the bloated 2016 desktop components.

In versions prior to Office 2019, users could adjust the additions and subtractions of related components in the “Uninstaller” in “Control Panel“. But in Office 2019, you can’t remove unwanted components, whether it’s an online installation or a mirrored installation.

If you need an Office 2019 product CD-Key, you can purchase the following product. MS Office 2019 and Windows 10 are the best partners for everyday work.

After repeated trials and failures, I finally found the custom installation of Office 2019 using the Microsoft officially provided ODT (Office Deployment Tool).

Preparation for the previous period

First you need to uninstall the Office 2016/2013 that was previously installed. It is recommended to use Microsoft’s official uninstaller for a complete uninstall. In addition, non-Office 365 users should pay attention to backing up Office license keys before uninstalling. After uninstalling, download the Office Deployment Tool on the official website.

Office Deployment Tool 2019

Run the Office Depolyment Tool and follow the prompts to extract the configuration file to a local location, such as the desktop. You can see that a total of three files were extracted, including the main program setup.exe and three suffixes for the .xml configuration file. The default configuration file is for installing all components of Office 356 or Office 2019 Enterprise, while ordinary users do not need all the components. So we need to modify the configuration file.

Customize your Microsoft Office 2019

If you want to install the pre-installed version of Office 2019, you can customize the configuration file directly on the official website and download it to your local computer. Once you have logged in to https://config.office.com/, click on “Create a new configuration” in the lower left corner of the homepage to create a new profile.

Office 365 Client Configuration Service

This custom page offers a number of options for customization, such as the release version of Office 2019 (if you don’t have your version of Office, refer to the manual configuration steps at the end of the paragraph), bundled components, language packs, and update options. Follow the prompts and combine your actual needs step by step. Pay attention to the “Apps” column in “Products and releases” and select only the components you need.

After completing all customizations, click on “Export” in the upper right corner to export the configuration file.

To export, you need to select the default file format. Select the second “Office Open XML fomarts” here, and save it with the default file name Configuration.xml to the same directory where you extracted the Office Depolyment Tool.

Manually write a configuration file

For users who don’t find an Office version that meets their needs in the official website customization page, you need to create a configuration file yourself using an editor such as VS Code. Here I provide a generic template.

<Configuration>
  <Add OfficeClientEdition="64" Channel="Monthly">
    <Product ID="LanguagePack">
      <Language ID="en-us" />
      <Language ID="zh-cn" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="Access" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="Excel" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="Groove" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="Lync" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="OneDrive" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="OneNote" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="Outlook" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="PowerPoint" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="Publisher" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="Word" />
    </Product>
    <Product ID="ProPlus2019Volume">
      <Language ID="en-us"
      <Language ID="zh-cn" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="Access" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="Excel" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="Groove" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="Lync" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="OneDrive" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="OneNote" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="Outlook" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="PowerPoint" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="Publisher" />
      <ExcludeApp ID="Word" />
      </Product>
  </Add>
</Configuration>

Where <OfficeClientEdition=”64″ /> optional 32 (32-bit) and 64 (64-bit); Language ID=”en-us” optional en-us (English-United States) and zh-cn (Chinese-Chinese mainland) ); <Product ID=”LanguagePack” /> is the installed language pack, no modification; here mainly modify the <Product ID=”ProPlus2019Volume” /> double quotes parameters, refer to the table below to select the appropriate Product ID ( Quoted from Tenfourms). Different versions of the activation abbreviations have been marked.

  1. To use ODT, configuration script requires information about which edition (Product ID) to install. Installing wrong edition might make activating Office impossible. Always use the correct Product ID corresponding with your O365 subscription plan, product key or volume license.
  2. Table of editions. In Activation column available activation methods for each edition:
    • P = Retail product key
    • S = O365 Personal, Home, Business or Enterprise subscription / license
    • V = Volume licensing (KMS or MAK)

Finally edit <ExcludeApp ID=”” /> to configure the components you do not want to install. It should be noted that the configuration of each Product part needs to be modified synchronously. Finally, the edited configuration file is named Configuration.xml and stored in the same directory as the Office Depolyment Tool. For more information on ODT profiles, read the official documentation.

Customize and install Office 2019 with ODT

Use the shortcut key “Win” + “R” to enter CMD in the run box. Open a command prompt, use the command cd to enter the directory of the previously extracted Office Depolyment Tool, and run the command setup.exe /download Configuration.xml to download Office 2019. A folder named Office will appear under the directory, the file size is around 2.5G, and you will wait patiently for the download to complete (the command runs to the end).

Then run the command setup.exe /configure Configuration.xml to install the customized Office 2019. The customized components will be displayed in the form of icons on the installation interface, which can be confirmed again.
